Um ein konsistentes Weltbild zu erhalten ist es dann nötig, Vorstellungen zu revidieren. Belief Revision stellt also einen rationalen Prozess dar.

Hier soll diskutiert werden, wie eine solche Belief Revision für räumliche Vorstellungen aussieht. Dabei sollen neue, widersprüchliche Angaben zu einer vorhandenen Anordnung von Objekten im Raum berücksichtigt werden.

Wie sieht dieser Revisionsprozess bereits existierender Vorstellungen aus? Nach welchen Kriterien und Mechanismen läuft er ab und wie sieht das Ergebnis aus?

Diese Fragen sollen durch eine Kombination aus Verhaltensexperimenten und formalen Methoden beantwortet werden. Ziel ist es diese kognitiven Prozesse auf zwei Stufen zu beschreiben: zum einen auf der Verhaltensebene und zum anderen mit Hilfe informationsverarbeitender Prozesse.

Grundlage hierfür sind die in Verhaltensexperimenten gewonnenen Erkenntnisse, wie Menschen die Konsistenz zwischen unvereinbaren räumlichen Informationen erzeugen und welche Informationen sie bereit sind zu widerrufen, um Konsistenz wieder herzustellen.

Auf dieser Basis werden dann formale Methoden verwendet, um die Informationsverarbeitungsprozesse beim räumlichen Denken und bei der Revision räumlicher Vorstellungen algorithmisch zu rekonstruieren.

Die Ethnologie konnte zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits auf zwei Jahrzehnte kognitiver Forschung zurückblicken; sie hatte entscheidende Beiträge zur Kognitiven Wende in den Sozialwissenschaften geleistet und gehörte deshalb nicht nur zu den Pionieren auf diesem Gebiet, sondern bildete — zumindest anfangs — auch eine der tragenden Säulen im interdisziplinären Gebäude der Kognitionswissenschaften.

Über die Fachgrenzen hinweg profitierten alle Beteiligten von dem regen Austausch theoretischer Konzepte, methodischer Zugänge und empirischer Erkenntnisse.

Seit damals jedoch haben sich die Ethnologie und die übrigen Kognitionswissenschaften zunehmend entfremdet — und das in einem Umfang, dass die Ethnologie, vor allem in der deutschen Forschungslandschaft, nicht einmal mehr als potentieller Partner wahrgenommen wird.

Das ist umso bedauerlicher, als die kulturelle Dimension der Kognition in den letzten Jahren wieder zunehmend ins Blickfeld der internationalen Forschung rückt Bender et al.

Für ein umfassendes Verständnis davon, wie Kultur und Kognition interagieren, ist die Expertise der Kognitiven Ethnologie allerdings unverzichtbar, und so mehren sich nun die Anstrengungen, der wechselseitigen Entfremdung entgegenzuwirken und die Ethnologie wieder stärker in die Kognitionswissenschaften zu integrieren.

Dieses Symposium ist Teil dieser Anstrengungen. Es bringt Vertreter einer jungen Generation von Wissenschaftlern zusammen, die nicht nur kognitionsethnologisch, sondern insbesondere fächerübergreifend arbeiten, um das Wechselspiel von Kultur und Kognition zu erforschen.

Birgitt Röttger-Rössler wird kognitionsethnologische Perspektiven und Forschungsansätze zum Thema autobiographisches Gedächtnis vorstellen.

Daniel Haun wird von aktuellen Arbeiten aus der Forschergruppe für Vergleichende Kognitive Anthropologie berichten.

Infection through bites may prove deadly in this film, but there's an overarching social pressure that weighs down on the main characters of the film as well.

Well imagine that he's now the protagonist of your picture and you follow his adventures throughout a spaceship populated with humans suspended in hypersleep.

Cats can get up to an awful lot in that time, as the revived crew soon finds out. The ultimate reveal of this monstrosity is not to be missed, though the gore factor significantly outweighs the scare factor in this one.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is an absolutely gorgeous film with a compelling protagonist and well-developed supporting cast, a damn fine story that's among the best of Gothic dramas, and one of the best vampire stories ever seen on the big or small screen.

It's that good. And if it's luscious visuals and a stunning soundtrack you're looking for, you'll find that right alongside the scary storytelling.

It was originally intended to be produced in live-action to appear alongside the rest of the film, but the budget didn't allow it, so this fantastic animated version was produced instead.

And I'm glad it worked out this way; there's a haunting quality to the storytelling style that works so much better in this medium.

Following the survivor of an attack by the dreaded pirate ship the Black Freighter, the tale watches as he attempts to race home in order to warn his wife and children of the pirates' impending arrival.

We see the lone survivor talking to his dead crew mates and eventually using their bloated bodies as floatation devices to keep his makeshift raft aloft in the sea.

Whether it's feasting on raw gull meat, surviving shark attacks, or his ultimate mental breakdown, every step along the survivor's descent into madness becomes increasingly difficult to watch.

The dread you feel is well-earned throughout the telling and the final reveal is one that will stick with you for a long time.

Here's an example where the anime adaptation, excellent as it is, still pales in comparison with its source material. However, the animated telling of the tale of Guts, Griffith, Casca, and the Band of the Hawk is absolutely stunning in its execution and jaw-dropping in its insanity.

This installment is the third and final chapter in the Golden Age Arc, so you might want to do your homework with the relatively tame first two chapters before diving in, but once you hit the third film, hold onto your butts.

Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III - The Advent finds the once unbeatable Griffith broken, emaciated, and without control of his limbs after a year of severe torture in a dungeon.

His brutal, selfish decision to take his own life is tough enough to watch, but it's just a shadow of what's to come. Most of the Band of the Hawk is drawn into another dimension during a solar eclipse where they come face to face with powerful archdemons known as the God Hand.

What follows is an epic sacrifice to these entities as lesser demons fall upon the fighters and Griffith himself is elevated to new heights of power and cruelty.

The horrors that await the Band of the Hawk are only a fraction as vile as those perpetrated by Griffith against his former friends and allies, Guts and Casca.

It's a really, really difficult watch if you've been following along with the characters' journeys, and one of the most nightmare-inducing sequences in all of anime This is one of my three absolute favorite entries on this list.

In the center of the room, workers fill a carefully crafted mold with a special liquid silicone mixture, the primordial goo from which all RealDolls are formed.

Unsettling as it all may be, I can't help but be impressed by the meticulous construction and keen attention to detail. It's all an illusion, but a very carefully crafted one.

And effective. As we finish our tour, I come away wondering how long it will take before Harmony has that same level of polish.

And once Abyss gets there, I wonder what happens next. Back at Abyss headquarters in San Marcos, I had a conversation with an animatronic RealDoll prototype running on the Harmony engine.

Now, back home in Louisville, Kentucky, I want to see what else the software is capable of. I'm normally an iPhone user, but Harmony isn't available in the App Store yet.

It won't be until Realbotix can get Apple to approve a version with the adult content stripped out. Luckily, my TV came with an Android tablet remote I rarely need.

Now, I'll use it to to talk to Jackie. But before we can get to know each other, I have to finish creating her. Choosing the name is easy enough "Jackie" seemed as good as anything -- it sprang to mind because a jacket hung on the wall next to me at the time.

But now, I have to craft her personality by assigning 10 "persona points" to traits like "sexual," "moody" and "intense. After I settle on an extroverted intellectual with a great sense of humor, the app asks me to pick Jackie's voice.

Now, it's time to sculpt Jackie's physical appearance. The process is similar to designing a character in a video game like Dark Souls or Mass Effect, but the options are more overwhelming than I'd expected.

The idea is to build your dream girl, but with her naked avatar morphing before my eyes as I make adjustments, I can't help but imagine the process from her perspective.

What kind of hairstyle would Jackie want? How big should her navel be? What's the right cup size for her frame? What color panties would she prefer?
